Spinning Clio: Introduction to Historical Methods

Oh Boy, what should I say?
Before I say anything further, those who are interested in Historical Methods, especially those who are pursuing MA History, Semester system from Punjab University Chandigarh in the fourth semester, they first check HERE.

I am blogging since 2004. It was in 2005, I located this essay. The essay is written by an engineer who is interested in History and had acquired a degree in History. The visitors who will explore the link, will learn about the actual contents of the essay and the source of the contents of the essay.

Now when I am preparing my lecture for my class, I felt the need of visiting this essay. Presently, I can not write much but, it was an experience to relocate this essay through the links maintained on my blogs. I was not able to locate the link from this blog. I wonder that if this is going to be re-posting of this link. But I would say one thing, the Internet is definitely one way of learning and sharing. The education system must undertake some serious studies to make it more effective. They are doing it since long under the title of ICT but I do not see it around. I am trying to do it since 2004 but I do not feel encouraged. But, today, my faith in my paradigm is reinstated.

Present : a Fading Glimpse

Present : a Fading Glimpse

The Actual Thought:
The present is made up of past. The present is experienced. Therefore, it is never comprehended. The past is as an effect and as a grain in form of a material, of which, present is made. The present has in it the material of past and a factor of future realised in it (feature which I have yet not come across in the philosophy of history), and therefore, it is not wholly a past. Hence, the mind ( It is here intentionally used. Kindly read the heading Background also), the perception and realization which has been taken wrongly as the proof of present, are actually the recreation of past in present as a Passing Glimpse.

The factor of future is not yet incorporated in philosophy of history(I am not favouring positivists).  But, a future, which did not remain as such when it had revealed itself in present. But that present, in itself is a fading glimpse. However, I have yet to read a thinker, which had taken up this dimension in the making of past.

If ever, the present is lived by a person and the society of human beings, it is a Fading Glimpse – merely a fading glimpse.

Those who live life in a fast lane, they live a life of a fading glimpse, which they enjoy. They enjoy this experience because it is as per the Nature and the laws of Psychology that postulate that the brain focuses on a point for a very small span of a time. It is a thought which Mahatama Buddha had shared with Ananda. It is the core of their Transmigration Theory of Soul. Those who are of a brooding nature, they just escape the enjoyment of escaping glimpse. However, some of them are lucky enough to understand and perceive the actual past which lives in their present.

The Background:

I am presently re-reading “The Idea of History” by R. G. Collingwood edited and compiled by Jan Van Der Dussen and printed by OUP, New York, issued in India in 1993. I am reading his Epilegomena. The above view and opinion was jotted down after lot many thoughts had engulfed my mind sphere while reading Collingwood. I here substantiate and emphasize that during this phase of reading, I am able to understand Collingwood in a better way. Collingwood had used terms from different languages. It becomes every difficult to maintain the comprehension of the thought content while reading this books because one does not understand the meanings of all the terms which have been borrowed from numerous European languages. I here acknowledge the benefit which I have derived from Google Translate feature. It is with that assistance that I have reached up to the first section of Epilegomena. That is other thing, that I have yet to search for the meaning of Epilegomena. On the whole, all that written above, the terms used in there, are all those which had been used by Collingwood for writing 'The Idea of History'. Hence, those who knows what I am talking about, may take the idea given above with Collingwood in background and the premises.

Controversies of Historiography of Indian Subcontinent from 1960 to 1970s

To a Question that what does Marxist History actually mean, Dr. Upinder Singh had given an elaboration to Malvika Singh. It had been published in Tehelka of Tarun J Tejpal, Vol 5, issue 33, Saturday, August 23, 2008, New Delhi.

According Dr. Upinder Singh, “Well, I think there is a lot of diversity within what we describe as Marxist historiography. Marxist history writing of the 1960s and 1970s was truly path braking. It brought in an important focus on economic and social processes. It brought in marginalised and subordinated social groups. It brought in a focus on agrarian relations, class structure, forms of labour. At the same time, it is important to recognise that Marxist historiography, especially in forms in which it percolated down into classrooms and public consciousness, also did have major problems. One of the limitations was the fact that religion, for instance, was generally treated as something that was a reflection of existing social and political power relations and certainly the aesthetic dimensions of the past were not given the kind of treatment they deserved. When an ideology, - any ideology - becomes dominant, deeply entrenched in research and education institutions, and is given state patronage, it can become a major obstacle to fresh creative thinking. I think without disagreement and dissent there can be no progress in any discipline. It is also important to look at other strong ideological positions that exist in our times. You have right-wing interpretation of the past, which are constantly trying to impose a very monolithic view of Indian culture on us and are very intolerant of anyone who thinks differently.”

The above definition is complete in itself to some extent. However, Dr. Upinder, a teacher of Ancient History at Delhi University India, has obliquely referred to some controversies. The readers would be able to develop good picture of Indian Historiography in post independence India by referring to another statement made by S. Gopal, another established historian and son of Honourable President of India, S. Radhakrishanan. Dr. Upinder Singh is daughter of Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh. The statement of S. Gopal is given at the following link.
The Fear of History.

Further, an obituary by K. N. Pannikar, another established historian, which contains reference to debates of 1960s and 1970s plays another dimension and it can be accessed at the following link.

Harneet's Definition of Pre-Hisory and Proto-History

Harneet Singh Kahlon, the author of His-Story at www.vibranthistory.blogspot.com

Harneet Singh, the author of His-story or Vibrant History has written following definition of Pre-History and Proto-History.
I am reproducing them here for my definition section.

Pre history

The word Prehistory has been formed of two words - Pre (Latin) which means 'before' and Greek word 'historia' which means History. the term is often used to describe the period before written history. Paul Tournal originally coined the term Pré-historique in describing the findings he had made in the caves of southern France. It came into use in French in the 1830s to describe the time before writing, and was introduced into English by Daniel Wilson in 1851.Prehistory can be said to date back to the beginning of the universe itself, although the term is most often used to describe periods when there was life on Earth; dinosaurs can be described as prehistoric animals and cavemen are described as prehistoric people.

Proto history

Protohistory refers to a period between prehistory and history, during which a culture or civilization has not yet developed writing, but other cultures have already noted its istence in their own writings. For example, in Europe, the Celts and the Germanic tribes may be considered to have been protohistoric when they began appearing in Greek and Roman texts. Protohistoric may also refer to the transition period between the advent of literacy in a society and the writings of the first historians. The preservation of oral traditions may complicate matters as these can provide a secondary historical source for even earlier events. Colonial sites involving a literate group and a non-literate group, are also studied as protohistoric situations.

Macro History: A Definition

Mark Hall writes, “macro-histories are comparative studies of cultures and civilizations through time and across the globe. They often attempt to explain how the modern world came into existence, and they also often utilize an evolutionary perspective.”

The definition has been given by Mark Hall while writing a review on the book, “The Rhythms of History: A Universal Theory of Civilizations by Stephen Blaha, Auburn, New Hampshire: Pingree-Hill Publishing. ISBN 0-9720795-0-5”.

Rhythms of History: A Universal Theory of Civilizations by Stephen BlahaThe review is available at Human Nature Review.

I am starting a new category of Definitions in History. I will comment and collect such definitions under such category.
